Combine Hijab and Woven Fabrics, VoB Band Members Steal Attention in Paris

Recently the metal band Voice of Baceprot has been in the spotlight. This is because Voice of Baceprot is currently on their first tour in Europe. Voice of Baceprot has appeared in a number of countries, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and France since the beginning of last December.

Voice of Baceprot is a metal band from Garut. Formed in 2014, the band consists of three hijab-wearing women, namely Firdda Marsya Kurnia (vocals and guitar), Widi Rahmawati (bass), and Euis Siti Aisyah (drums). Their name is widely known after the cover video of the song by the US band, Rage Against the Machine, went viral on YouTube in 2015. Hijab Now, they have an album called The Other Side of Metalism.

One of their performances that was in the spotlight was when they performed at the music festival, Trans Musicales, France. Voice of Baceprot wears clothes that are equipped with ikat elements from Garut, their hometown. Through the official Instagram account @voiceofbaceprot, the band, commonly called VoB, shared the concept of clothing and explained about Garut ikat weaving.

“The clothes we wore when performing at the Trans Musicales 2021 in Rennes, France, showed elements of ikat weaving from Garut, West Java. Although not as well-known as leather products, our home region, Garut, also has traditional ikat weaving crafts that still compete with another ikat in Indonesia,” wrote the caption for VoB’s photo on Instagram.

Interestingly, the Garut ikat weaving worn by VoB is designed to be more modern and in accordance with the character of the metal band. The members, Marsya, Siti, and Widi, were seen wearing all black clothes and combat boots combined with black Garut ikat fabrics. Unisma It is known that their clothes were designed by designer Amet Distri and styled by Awanis Arifiani and Amalia Efendi.

According to VoB’s statement, this Garut ikat weaving was forgotten. This condition makes the craftsmen change their weaving style, which is usually colorful, so that it is dominated by one color. As a band from Garut, of course, VOB is proud to be able to wear their local handicrafts to the world’s fashion cities like France. “We are very happy to be able to wear this outfit. Apart from highlighting the beauty of traditional ikat weaving from Garut, it also reminds us of where we came from,” concluded VoB in the caption.

Talking about appearance, it turns out that Voice of Baceprot (VOB) feels a lot of attention because of their style, not the music they play. This was expressed by the vocalist and guitarist of VOB, Marsya. When performing in France, he and two of his colleagues admitted that they were asked a lot about the hijab.

“Do you want to hear a fact? So there is one thing that surprised me the most. Most of them (journalists) asked me about hijab. It made me feel like I came here for a fashion show. Hijab Not for this (music concert). Because they just focus on our appearance,” explained Marsya.

This VoB video then went viral on Tiktok. As of today, Tuesday (7/12), the video has been watched by 1.6 million viewers. The vocalist then explained that the hijab worn by VoB is a symbol of peace, love, and beauty.

“We came here not only to make dreams come true, but also to show all of you that the hijab is a symbol of peace, love, and beauty,” Marsya’s statement was greeted with loud applause from the audience present at Trans Musicales, France.
